PRECCINOV: Rice-fish farming, an innovative alliance between rice and fish serving producers.
By INFOPÊCHE
As part of the field mission of the National Steering Committee (NSC) of the PRECCINOV project, the first day of the visit, held on May 5, 2026 in the locality of Oumé, was marked by the discovery of the TONLA NOMTIA site, an innovative model of integrated agriculture adapted to the challenges of climate change.
Financed by the Adaptation Fund, the PRECCINOV project aims to strengthen the resilience of small-scale agricultural producers through the adoption of innovative and proven technologies and practices.
This mission, organised under the coordination of FIRCA, saw the participation of several institutional actors, including INFOPÊCHE, which is taking part in fieldwork alongside members of the National Steering Committee and technical partners of the project.
The TONLA NOMTIA site consists of two fish ponds connected to a micro-dam serving as a water reservoir, as well as six rice paddies, for a total area of 3,200 m². This system implements the rice-fish farming technique, an integrated agroecological approach combining fish farming and rice cultivation in the same space.
This innovation offers several major advantages:
✅ Natural improvement of soil fertility thanks to fish excrement;
✅ Increased rice yield;
✅ Natural feeding of fish by the rice ecosystem;
✅ Optimized water use;
✅ Dual source of income for producers through the sale of rice and fish;
✅ Better adaptation of farmers to the effects of climate change.
Although the project is still in its pilot phase, the observed results on the ground already demonstrate a strong adoption of this technique by beneficiaries, who have expressed their satisfaction with the positive impacts of this innovation on their agricultural activities and living conditions.
PRECCINOV thus confirms its ambition to promote a more resilient, sustainable agriculture that creates opportunities for rural communities in Côte d'Ivoire.
